Before I die, I will… finish my PhD. And I did… back in March 2016. Fully-funded by the AHRC, my thesis, entitled ‘In the Penumbra of Wilfred Bion: Possibilities for Literary Criticism’, was passed at viva this June by Dr Sarah Wood (University of Kent) and Professor Peter Boxall (University of Sussex). Exploring the potential contribution of the ideas of British psychoanalyst Wilfred Bion for literary criticism, my thesis draws on a diverse range of 20th century writers, including Freud, J. G. Ballard, Jean Rhys, Mary Butts, Stevie Smith, Nicholas Royle, and B. S. Johnson.
